"Finally, in the fall of 1913, the family came to winter in Lakeland, staying at the Hotel Orange, with plans to begin construction on their new home. James was still working as a wage carpenter but work must have been good in the growing town of Lakeland as he was able to pay rent [presumed to be renting as the 1920 census doesn’t specify] and still had enough income left over to buy some land on which he’d build his own home."
